ALN
Additional Learning Needs
At Bedwas Infant School, we value the abilities and achievements of all pupils and are fully committed to providing an inclusive, supportive, and stimulating environment where every child can thrive. We believe that all children should be encouraged and supported to reach their full potential, and we actively promote positive self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of success in all areas of learning.
Our staff are dedicated to supporting the ‘whole child’ and recognise the importance of early identification of any additional learning needs (ALN). Through careful observation, assessment, and ongoing monitoring, we aim to identify any barriers to learning at the earliest possible stage and put appropriate support in place.
We recognise that many pupils may experience additional or different learning needs at some point during their school journey. In most cases, these needs can be met through high-quality teaching and targeted support within the classroom. However, where necessary, we work closely with a range of external agencies and professionals to ensure that pupils receive the specialist support and guidance they require.
Our approach is guided by the Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales (Code of Practice). We are committed to following its principles by adopting a person-centred approach that places the child at the heart of all decision-making. We work in partnership with parents and carers, valuing their knowledge and involvement in supporting their child’s development.
For pupils identified as having ALN, we develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This is a personalised, statutory document that outlines the child’s specific needs, the outcomes we are working towards, and the provision required to support their progress. IDPs are created collaboratively with parents, staff, and, where appropriate, the child, ensuring that everyone has a shared understanding of the support in place.
IDPs are regularly reviewed to monitor progress and ensure that provision remains effective and responsive to the child’s changing needs. This ongoing cycle of assess–plan–do–review helps us to provide the best possible support for every learner.
The continued development and success of our provision for ALN is rooted in strong partnerships between school, home, and external agencies. Together, we strive to create an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
